June Reading Round-Up: Slow going but great books

This month felt like a slower month for reading, and spoiler alert, I only finished three books. But the ones that I read were great, so I don’t feel like it was wasted.

I think it was just that I was so tired every day this month that I barely got reading time in before my eyes were closing, or my Kindle was dropping on my face.

Here’s the summary for the month.

Books I read this month

Rewind It Back – Liz Tomforde

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (and a half)
Link: amazon.com
Format: Kindle

This is the final book in the “Windy Series”. It’s about two people who, after a messy breakup, meet back up in their adult lives. One is a successful sports star, and one is an aspiring interior designer working two jobs, trying to keep things together.

This one was just as enjoyable as the rest in the series. You can’t help but love each of the characters while trying to piece together what it was that drove them apart.

It was a great book, but it was easy to put down and come back to. It’s great for when you just want something fluffy to read that’s not too intense.

Code Name Hélène – Ariel Lawhon

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (and a half)
Link: amazon.com
Format: Kindle

This is technically historical fiction, but it’s largely based on the Australian spy, Nancy Wake. The author includes a section at the end to explain which bits of the story were false, and spoiler – there’s not a whole lot. It’s just a few minor details, changed dates and times, or a couple of characters combined into one.

My summary of this book: Nancy Wake is an absolute bad-ass.

This book flicks between POVs from before World War II, when she was meeting her husband, and when the war was raging and she was helping to arm the rebels holding off the Germans until the Allies landed in France.

It’s a fascinating, gripping read. You can see that during the middle of the month, my reading rate increased, and that was from this book.

Super enjoyable read.

Also, I think I got the recommendation to read this book from someone’s blog that I follow, so if that was you, thank you!

Conditioned – Amanda Russo

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Format: Kindle

Another recommendation from someone’s blog.

In this book, Tory is a barista and gets abducted by Carl. He’s creepy…in a major way. Carl has rebuilt her cafe directly under his house, part of a little town of sorts. Every day she has to go through the motions of serving him coffee, as if it were the same above ground. And she does, while also trying to figure out how to escape.

Carl’s also abducted several others, who are seemingly going along with his wishes. Stockholm Syndrome for some, “keeping the peace” for others.

This is a creepy, gripping read.

I was loving it, and I think I would have rated it higher if the ending hadn’t felt as blunt and sudden as it was. It just felt like after this long buildup, suddenly it was over. I was left feeling a bit like “oh…that’s it? Huh?”

I would still recommend reading it, I’d just say be prepared for a bit of whiplash.

Have you ever read a book that gave you whiplash? Or is there anything you think that I should add to the TBR list?
