After writing a post on Saturday about my anxiety crash, I’m happy to report that the Anzac Day long weekend refilled my cup in a major way.
Being a public holiday, it meant most things were closed for the day. My son played at a friend’s house up the street, and I’m so grateful to our neighbours, because it meant I could potter around and do whatever I felt like. No responsibilities, no one calling my name…just…whatever.
- I did so much reading that I finished my latest book – House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J Maas (no. 2 in the Crescent City series, not an affiliate link btw). I’ll do a proper review when I do my monthly reading round-up, but let me just say, I was glad I didn’t have to put it down for long.
- I got some overdue housework done. My amazing husband smashed it out of the park in the morning, and vacuumed and mopped the house, cleaned the bathrooms, emptied the bins…he did a heap. So by the time I pulled my finger out, it meant I just had to clean the shower glass and I could pretty much call it a day!
- I made a new resin tumbler, which I still haven’t nailed yet. Making a new tumbler was one of my 52-in-52s for 2026 (my annual list of 52 things to do in 52 weeks), and this is my second one this year. So technically it’s done, but I’m still not happy with the finish. More sanding, another coat, and this one should be passable. I still want to try making some more, though.

It was honestly the exact day that I needed.
On Sunday, we went to watch my husband play in his first game of cricket with his new team. He hasn’t played for a long, long time, and I amused myself by teasing the men for how they were all complaining about their aches and pains (calling them the “Old Blokes Club”). But they played great! It was a lot of fun watching them have a hit. Even better, my son got to see his dad play, and most importantly, saw how to not throw a tantrum when you get out (like some…ahem…son).
After his game, we braved the shops, which are always manic after a public holiday.
They were shut for one day, people!
Why does everyone act like the world is ending, or that they’ve been starved or something? I don’t understand the way they all rush the stores and carry on.
Then again, we were part of the problem, so.
I needed shoes to match my dress for the wedding coming up next weekend, and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get to the stores during the week. Plus, I needed my stylist son to be there, given that he picked my dress, and all!
Fun fact – he also tried to get me to buy some earrings too. And they were gorgeous. He’s got great taste.
After trying a few stores, I ended up returning to the very first one and picking up some shoes from there.
They’re espadrille wedges, and they make me into practically a giant. My husband is 6ft 4, and I’m very nearly at his eye level.
They feel very comfortable and stable, and a bonus is that they should work with some dresses and skirts for spring and summer too. That is, if I can get away from wearing my “uniform” of my connies (Converse).

Back home again, it was time for more reading, a few more chores, and vegging out! I crammed the rest of my book in before bed, and finished it late last night (and spammed my friends, debriefing and sharing my unhinged theories).
By Sunday night, I could really feel the difference. My nervous system felt calm, and I was genuinely looking forward to the week.
As I write this, it’s Monday night, and we just got back from an outing to pick up ice cream (despite being a cold and rainy evening). I also have brand new face mask cream sitting in the bathroom, ready to be applied. My goal of intentional self-care each day is officially in action.
Cup refilled!
How was everyone else’s weekend?
