I can’t believe I’ve managed seven days straight of blogging, thanks to the daily gratitude prompts from The Optimistic Muse.
Tonight I’m typing this out quickly from a room at my friend’s house that I’m visiting for the weekend. But I didn’t want to lose my streak, so here we are, smashing it out at 9.30pm so I can close my eyes.
Today’s prompt is:
I appreciate this ordinary object in my home…
This prompt was the topic of discussion on the way to school this morning between my son and me. And it seems that what’s classed as “ordinary” is very much up for interpretation.
L: I’m not grateful for my Nintendo Switch. It’s very ordinary, and I want a PS5.
Consider the point missed.
I tried to use it as a lesson to discuss how lucky we are to have things like toilets and showers. Running water, our ice machine. What about our beds and the couch, all the comforts we take for granted!
Long story short, I bored my son this morning, and I became grateful for all the simple things.
My favourite? The washing machine. Because screw doing that by hand!

Oh my gosh yes! I hear the whirring of my washing machine now and I am OH-so-grateful for that! I cannot imagine doing the laundry by hand. Yuck. I’m also grateful for my phone. Even if it wasn’t a smart phone, I appreciate being able to call/talk to/communicate with people that I love. And I’m grateful for cars. To get me to where I need to go. And air conditioning on those hot summer days!!
Oh my gosh yes, and remember having to try to find a pay phone on the street if you had to call someone while out and about? And having to remember phone numbers or carry a little phone book notepad thing?
