What I Got Up To This Weekend (Craft Fails, a Movie, and a Cleanout)

The weekend flew past, but it was full of some great wins.

Though, I really need to learn to go to bed on time. Especially when I’ve got the time to myself to sleep in.

Me Time

I got some solid crafting time in this weekend. My husband and son went to Brissie to house sit for our in laws, and earlier in the week my husband had suggested I stay home if I wanted some “me time”. Of course I was down for that, which left me with Friday night and all of Saturday to potter around.

I have no idea how to not be busy, so instead of relaxing or slothing, I did a heap of stuff. So I’m still pretty knackered from the weekend, but it was incredibly fulfilling.

All that to say I missed them, and I was glad when they came home.

Project Time

I’ve got a couple of things on my to do list, so I was able to dedicate some time on the weekend to these.

I got a lot of time on doing some video editing, which was really fun. And in between that, I spent time working on some craft projects.

One of them ended up being really challenging. I’d finished the design, but didn’t get around to actually cutting it out until Sunday morning. And everything that could go wrong, did.

  • The first time I cut the design out, it was way too small. So I recut it. How did I not pick that up when measuring it the first time?
  • The second time (the right size), I used the heat press to apply the first part of the design, and it went on crooked. Thankfully I was able to use my steam iron to remove it and there was no pesky glue residue left behind to deal with. Another re-cut.
  • With the design on the back finally complete, I swapped to the front. Again, my design had trouble sticking down. The reason this time? I had forgotten to take the back sheet off, and had stuck it down to that instead. Another re-cut, of the front design this time.
  • Under the heat press (with longer time this time) every letter was happy to stay stuck down instead of the letter “h”. Which decided it would twist and warp itself into something else entirely. You guessed it – another re-cut, this time just for a single letter.

I was very, very grateful when it was done.

Needless to say, I abandoned any other craft ideas I had for that day since the likelihood of my screwing it up was high.

Normally I’m not that scattered, or are designs that problematic.

I blame it on being awake from 3am. The night before I’d felt super tired, so didn’t think I had to take the sleeping aid my doc prescribed. Nope…still awake early. Thanks perimenopause, you jerk.

Cleanout Time

While I was doing the above-mentioned shirt, I went looking for my heat resistant tape (to help keep the design in place).

It took forever to find it.

As I hunted through my many baskets and shelves, it became increasingly obvious again just how many craft supplies I have. You know how I mentioned I was thinking of doing a craft challenge to use up my supplies? Yeah….this needs to happen.

I ended up stockpiling some of the supplies in the middle of my office, so that I could start an inventory of the materials to use in my challenge. I found glitters, empty Christmas baubles, slabs of timber, timber coasters, wooden letters, jenga-style building blocks, cardstock, the list goes on. I even found wax and candle wicks, though in my defence my husband bought those for me. Even the cool wooden wicks that crackle – they’re my favourite.

Some of the craft supplies I found

This week I’ll spend some time researching some projects and come up with a to do list.

Some of the projects I already know I want to do, just haven’t gotten around to them.

The jenga-style tower blocks I originally purchased when my son was about 3 or 4. He had really gotten into hot wheels, and I saw a craft video online where they used the blocks to build a really cool wall display. Unfortunately these blocks were too narrow so the cars would fall straight off. Instead, I’ve decided to turn them into drinking games and sell them online. Stuff like where you pull a block out then have to do whatever it says e.g. take a sip, pour some into a cup (then another one says “drink what’s in the cup), speak only using questions for 3 rounds, etc.

Some of these will help with some 52s as well. I found earring supplies, and faux leather, so I can use those to knock off the goal to make earrings. Or the cardstock to use to make a shadow box.

I just need a to do list now, and then I think the challenge will be ready. I need a fancy name for the challenge too – Just do it June? Anyone else in for a challenge next month?

Movie Time

On Saturday night I had planned a long soak in the bath, and lots of reading time. Instead, a friend and I decided to go see a movie with 15 minutes notice.

It’s the fastest I’ve ever gotten ready, I think I was out the door within 5 minutes. I managed to get to her house, pick her up, and then arrive at the cinema in time. The ads and trailers for other movies were still playing. Seriously, the fact there’s nearly 20-25 minutes of advertising before movies is ridiculous.

We went and saw The Devil Wears Prada 2.

I’m not going to share spoilers in case anyone is reading this. But I will say that I think it does well for a sequel, because it’s always hard to live up to the original. It was enjoyable, and I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed. There are some things I would have liked to change, but I understand why things were the way they were, to drum home a social commentary point.

I think everyone played their roles incredibly well. I love movie trivia, and there were a lot of fun nods to the original. Things like seeing two people comparing blue belts etc. It’s a fun watch.

Also Stanley Tucci would make the best father/uncle/family figure. He gives me all the warm fuzzy feels in these movies. Just the person that can call you out when you need it, but also support and encourage you in subtle ways that you don’t even realise he’s doing it. I love his character.

Anyways, if you’ve seen it, I’d love to know what you think!

How was your weekend? Are you keen for a “Just Do It June” where you nominate a challenge for yourself?

  1. I liked the book The Devil Wears Prada, but never watched the movie, so I won’t watch the sequel. But my husband and I enjoyed watching Tucci this weekend in a show he does about food in Italy!

    • Ooh I’ve seen that show advertised actually. My husband’s family are italian, so we would love to go there one day, it’s good to know the show is entertaining. I’ll have to give it a go!

I’ll have to add the book to my TBR list, thanks!

  2. I still haven’t seen the sequel and I’m sad about it!! I need to find someone to watch it with me!
